Themis is an Italian Swiss company specialized in the construction of innovative systems dedicated to the reduction and valorization of waste products from industrial production.
Through its patented technology, Themis is able to reduce the volume of waste liquids to be disposed of (by up to 90%), along with associated operational costs and emissions. Thanks to the biotechnology expertise of the group, when possible, it can also valorize the converted materials for recovery and further use.
At the company’s modern production facility in Legnano (MI), the technical offices, analysis laboratories, a test area for trialing and testing proposed technologies and innovations, as well as a dedicated area for the construction and testing of plants, equipment, and products conceived and developed by Themis, are located.
Themis operates as an EPC Contractor® in the fields of biogas, water treatment, cogeneration, process engineering, prototyping, and industrial automation. It also collaborates with universities and research centers in Italy and abroad for the development and application of its technologies.
Themis has received numerous important international and national awards in various sectors of engineering and sustainability.
Michele Romanò, born in 1973, has been the CEO of Themis S.p.A. since 2018, with a specific mandate for the development of the company’s R&D sector. As a manager, he has extensive international experience in engineering design development and in managing the construction of complex industrial process plants in sectors such as chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food, and oil & gas equipment manufacturing. Among his distinguishing features, he is an author and developer of several patents and industrial know-how that are recognized as unique at the international level.
Here is a brief interview in which he talks about the reality of Themis.
“Our mission is to promote innovative technologies that are useful for resource recovery and for significantly reducing industrial waste and by-products.
In this historical moment, it is crucial to adopt a strategic approach that leads to a transition toward a circular economy, based on intelligent, conceptually regenerative growth, which begins with efficient resource management. Sustainability is a goal that, in fact, unites the life and future of all of us.
Many companies need to dispose of a large volume of sludge, organic waste, or wastewater every year. This operation has a high environmental impact as well as significant costs. Themis is able to reduce this economic and environmental impact through an innovative proprietary technology – Themis WRT – capable of reducing industrial sludge and liquid waste to small volumes while recovering the water contained in them. Whenever possible, using biotechnology applied to the process machinery we’ve patented, we can convert these wastes into secondary raw materials for other industrial, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and agricultural uses. As a result, the amount of waste to be sent to landfills is significantly reduced (in some cases, it is entirely eliminated), along with the costs associated with disposal, generating new sources of revenue.
In the case of pharmaceutical sludge and waste, Themis uses its technology to treat mother liquors by rationed distillation and separating the components of the matrix with different boiling points. At the end of the process, a granular dried product is obtained, with a 90% volume reduction, as well as distilled water with suitable characteristics for controlled discharge. Another successful application is the treatment of tannery wastewater. The innovative technological process guarantees the recovery of 98% of the wastewater, which can be reused in leather tanning processes: a unique result in the industry.

The technology offered by Themis is versatile and can be used in all sectors where liquid or solid waste is produced; our customers are mainly companies in the food processing, agriculture, chemical, pharmaceutical and agricultural production sectors. We develop plants and machinery of various sizes and with different modes of use in these sectors. Currently, the sectors in which intervention is easiest are those related to the production of fertilisers and the treatment of zootechnical waste, due to the recent Russian-Ukrainian conflict, which has restricted the exchange of fertilisers mainly produced in Eastern Europe and Russia, thus making it necessary to produce them independently in Italy using locally generated waste and by-products. The food, pharmaceutical and leather tanning sectors are also experiencing significant growth.
Finally, we develop advanced automation systems and customized IoT (Internet of Things) systems based on customer needs (supervision systems, data acquisition and concentration, and field equipment), because it is essential for every company to know, measure, and monitor its efficiency and to directly experience the benefits of using our industrial systems, identifying its carbon footprint.
